Photos: Collection of Historic Shots from the Crewson Collection

October 7, 2013 by Doug Webster

During our recent visit to Dorset, Bogie, Larry Rublee and I met with Wilma Jean Nickason who generously loaned us an envelope full of wonderful old photos of the camp, campers, directors and activities stretching back to the Camp’s founding in 1910.

Larry has scanned all of them and where there was information on the back, included it for use with the captions you will find on each.

In some cases we have no information and the picture is simply listed as Image #.  If you have more information about any of these shots, let me know and I will add it to the site.  Be sure to note which photo you are referencing by the title.

Bob….we will update that caption. The picture was one of a batch given to us by Wilma Jean Nickason who is the daughter of Olga Crewson, and thus Bill’s grand daughter. I am not sure of the origins of the originals, from which we made scans for posting here on the site.

By the way, we are encouraging camp alumni to submit their memories of Otter and would invite you to do so as well. You can do so via an e-mail to me at dweb823 AT aol dot com, and we’ll post it here. Your contribution would be very valuable as you attended the camp much earlier than most of the alumni who will be returning to Dorset in September for our reunion. If you have photos from your days at camp those would also be great. We can scan originals and return them to you.

  2. Bob Schneider says:

I just discovered this Camp Otter web site by accident.

I took a look at the Crewson collection photos and was surprised to find my older brother’s photo near the beginning. The captions needs editing – Pierce (Snitz) Schneider not Snitzy Sneider.
He attended Camp Otter for several summers, about 1937-1942. The photo was taken in our back yard in Hamburg (I can tell from the background). I am not sure how the photos got to your web site.

I spent many summers of my youth at Camp Otter (1942-1949)

I have enjoyed many items on the site.

    So many fond memories.

Howie Ortner was a saint. The stuff he put up with!

Bill Crewson was all of the things mentioned by various contributors, and then some.

  3. Dave Pohlman says:

A great collection. Thanks to you guys for posting it and to Jean for loaning it to such a bunch of reprobates :o)
